Solution

This problem is only appearing under the following circumstances:

  1. an LDAP server (OpenLDAP, Active Directory, ...) is used
  2. the server uses referrals

UnfortunatelyIf you get this error, User Profiles for JIRA does not currently yet support ADs user directories with referrals yet. The issue is tracked in UPJ-52.
