Recurring login prompts for SharePoint document macro

Problem

When I try to add a new SharePoint document macro to my Confluence page, I am asked to login to SharePoint Online even though I'm already to logged in. Additionally I'm unable to follow the prompt because the login button immediately reappears when I click on it. An "internal server error" appears below. The issue does not get resolved by choosing a different browser.

Further Analysis

Please check if you are affected by this known cause (for Internet Explorer). Otherwise proceed with this article.

When you go into the browser developer tools (press key F 12) and enter the network tab, you will see a 500 error. The response includes

The SafeQueryPropertiesTemplateUrl "The SafeQueryPropertiesTemplateUrl "{0}" is not a valid URL." is not a valid URL.

Solution

The top level permissions in SharePoint Online might be missing.

  1. Check whether the "Read items in all site collections" permission is granted to the app registration in Azure (see Add Application to Azure Active Directory).
  2. Check for your personal Global Admin Account which permission level it has in the root site collection and whether the "Use Remote Interfaces" is granted for this permission level.
